EU Council Working Party on Statistics (CWPS)

dr. Áron Kincses

Welcome!

The Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union begins on the 1ˢᵗ of July 2024.

The Hungarian Presidency Team is eager to lead the Council Working Party on Statistics and aims to accomplish progress together by advancing statistics on a European level through the relevant legislative dossiers. We will achieve this by building upon the excellent progress made by previous presidencies.

We are committed to working towards the objectives of the Trio Programme and the priorities of the Hungarian Presidency and will address important issues such as the future directions of the ESS, access to new data sources and embracing technological development in statistics.

Based on these issues, the Hungarian Presidency will hold a High-Level Meeting on the topic of “Towards an ESS Vision 2030”.

We aim to host a constructive event with a large range of discussions and knowledge sharing.

On our website, we will publish information throughout the Presidency about any updates and advancements achieved when it comes to European statistics.

In case of any queries, please feel free to contact us at eu2024@ksh.hu

Warm regards,
Dr. Áron Kincses

Presidency Programme

Programme of the Presidency Trio

The Presidency Trio, bringing together Spain, Belgium and Hungary, runs from 1ˢᵗ July 2023 to 31ˢᵗ December 2024. Spain holds the Presidency in the second half of 2023, followed by Belgium (January–June 2024) and Hungary (July–December 2024).

The Presidency trio will collaborate with members of the European Statistical System and with all our partners. Special focus will be on the modernisation of the ESS, and tackling challenges derived from this. There will also be emphasis on the statistical response to crises and the need to raise awareness of statistics. The Trio countries will also work towards strengthening the value of official statistics and advocating for European data regulations.

Subsequently, the Presidency Trio will aim at responding adequately to a broad range of users’ needs such as statistical literacy, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by new data sources and technologies and ensuring the secure production of high-quality statistics.

Priority of the Hungarian Presidency

The Hungarian Presidency will build on the valuable progress made by previous presidencies.

The main focus of the Hungarian Presidency will be the new vision of the ESS and its progress towards modernisation. Building on the progress of the previous Presidencies, the Hungarian Presidency will aim to foster cooperation and coordination between the member states as well as other relevant stakeholders with special regard to the implementation of the new legislative provisions on access to privately held data. It will also seek to embrace technological advancements of the digital era and its impact on the efficiency of producing official statistics across Europe and the implementation of the European data strategy.

Furthermore, the Hungarian Presidency will address the response strategy to potential crisis scenarios and its effect on statistics. Identifying and making use of new possibilities will help to circumvent potential challenges and result in the creation of reliable and high-quality official statistics amongst member states, satisfying the data needs.

Based on the aforementioned points, the Hungarian Presidency is planning to hold a High-Level Meeting on 12–13 September 2024, on the topic of “Towards an ESS Vision 2030”.
